Community Justice and the 'Big Society'
This study, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn
Foundation, is exploring the scope for, and potential
benefits of, community involvement in the delivery of criminal
justice in England and Wales. It will focus, in particular, on
deprived neighbourhoods where the need for effective community
engagement is greatest. What we hope to achieve is to find some
practical ways of transforming the rhetoric of community engagement
into reality in poor communities.
ICPR was the coordinator of Euro-Justis, a large-scale 40-month
EU project funded under Framework Programme 7, which has just
finished. The project developed a suite of survey measures to
measure public trust in justice and public perceptions of the
legitimacy of justice. It has led to a module on trust in justice
in the 2010 European Social Survey, and analysis on this will start
in the Autumn. The Euro-Justis final report can be found
at www.eurojustis.eu. ICPR is a member of a
consortium that is currently negotiating a follow-on FP 7 project
with the European Commission.
