Project

Public engagement with justice: Evidence review

Summary

This review of existing research and evidence has been commissioned by the Nuffield Foundation. The subject is public engagement with justice, particularly in terms of public participation in the scrutiny and delivery of justice, and the transparency and representativeness of the justice system. The focus of the review is adjudication and the courts and tribunals system in England and Wales.

The project addresses three main questions:

1. What are the meanings of and rationales for public engagement with justice?

2. What does existing research and evidence tell us about the nature and extent of public engagement with justice?

3. What are the implications of current knowledge about public engagement with justice for the development of future policy and practice?

The project runs from January to August 2026.
