Sappho Xenakis (DPhil, Oxon) is Reader in Criminology and International Relations at Birkbeck, where she is a founding Co-Director (Social Sciences) of the cross-disciplinary Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies, and founding convenor of the public-facing Criminology seminar series. 

Sappho's research explores the emergence and evolution of criminal justice policies in national, transnational and global arenas. Her research has largely focused on state punishment and on efforts to counter organised and white-collar crime, and has attracted awards from the Critical Criminal Justice Section of the US-based Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and from the European Society of Criminology.
